Therefore, since God in His mercy has given us this new way, we never give up. 2 Corinthians 4:1
I have to admit it, I was not familiar with this verse. Have I ever wanted to give up? Sure. lots of times, but I just could not bring myself to do it. If something had to bring me to my knees, that was better than giving in.
Let’s look at the verse in context. Paul is explaining that the gospel is hidden from sinners, that the devil has blinded their minds, I have found that to be true as well even of Christians, many want nothing to do with hearing about healing or spiritual gifts, that there are demonic influences and even the Rapture or catching away of the church, they have been grounded in what they deem, salvation, and that is it, there is no more.
But there is more and Jesus taught more and healed more than we know, but many times, the new way of living is lost on people, and even some who have believed, they never experience the true depths of His love.
Paul says they are not preaching about themselves. It is for the benefit of the people that they are preaching and though they are in danger, they don’t give up. This can be true of many of us even today, whether in ministry or not, just the fact that you are a believer makes you a target of the enemy, many people and sometimes even other believers.
I used the verse from NLT, most do say ministry and not lose heart. Ministry or not, we do minister in some way, even husband to wife, mother to child, it is indeed a new way of life and love, hidden in Christ, that the world just doesn’t get, but they can certainly see. I used to think that I could have been a better example, but hearing later some things that were thought about me, made me realize they did see Jesus, and had let comparison and a jealous spirit, keep them from knowing Him better, something they would not receive, not because of me, but their own words and behavior.
We do have His light in us as believers and He is where we get our power and strength, the Spirit is His treasure in an earthen vessel. We may be crushed but we are not overcome, I like to think that we may bend but not, He heals heart, He doesn’t crush them. The only time He will is to draw you with His story of love and sacrifice and when that sin is gone from your heart, He fills it with the Spirit and even the subsequent baptism of the Spirit.
And He told them a parable to the effect that they ought always to pray and not lose heart. Luke 18:1
Therefore we do not lose heart. Though our outer self is wasting away, yet our inner self is being renewed day by day. 1 Corinthians 4:16
