I listen carefully to what God the LORD is saying, for He speaks peace to His faithful people. But let them not return to their foolish ways. Psalm 85:8 NLT
I just love this verse, I have a chorus of this somewhere on an old CD, I used to listen to it and sing it and will have to find it again. But even if I can’t locate it, the song is in my heart. And I am so glad I have listened and paid attention to His Word, and listened with my heart to hear the Holy Spirit speaking peace to my mind and heart.
I recently heard of something called a listening prayer. How often are we taking our problems to God and telling Him about troubles that He is already aware of, has made an escape from, and has an answer to. We talk, complain, cry out to Him, but are we listening?
Sometimes, answers will come immediately, others may take longer but don’t give up, just listen carefully. God doesn’t have to shout but He can. Elijah heard the still, small voice, at the cave. The wind of the Spirit goes everywhere, and the Spirit speaks, not of Himself, but what the Father and Son says.
I know people are still leery about spiritual gifts but they are real, and yes, there are counterfeits in the enemy’s arsenal but the Spirit will give you discernment if you listen and obey, and let it be confirmed, He doesn’t mind helping you, He is the teacher and that is what He is here for. Power and peace.
Don’t let fear dissuade you if the Spirit is pursuing you and is about to persuade you of God’s gifts and that He speaks peace. The Holy Spirit is the Spirit of power, love and a sound mind, from 2 Timothy 1:7. People may think God only speaks through His Word, the Bible, He does. But Jesus was and is the living Word, made flesh in John, He spoke God’s Word and ways to crowds and was often rejected and finally crucified. They were afraid He would take of and reign and one day He will, they did not understand that His kingdom was above.
He gave his life willingly and sent the Spirit, who now speaks to hearts. Are you listening? Set aside a few minutes each day to do just that. Are you a morning person or a night owl like me? It makes no difference, afternoon naps are great and refreshing, that is a good time, even after dinner. Keep praying and giving thanks, but listen. You will learn to discern the Spirit from all other voices, all the chaos and hectic, even frantic people, and the enemy that will disparage you at every turn to keep you from favor with God and man.
Jesus told the disciples to speak peace to the houses they visited and if it was received it would remain, but if not they could shake the dust from their feet, and we know beautiful feet carry the gospel of peace. Romans 10:15. Now, we can not only speak it to homes but to people as temples, holy vessels set aside and filled with the Spirit.
Do you not know that you are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit dwells in you? 1 Corinthians 3:16
Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body. 1 Corinthians 6:19, a warning against sexual immorality.
I speak peace to you today and you may have to stop sinning, repent, but there is hope and healing as the Spirit leads you, to rest, forgive, or just receive His Word as the case may be, He knows and speaks peace, and won’t let you go back to foolishness. So listen carefully to what God is saying, it is surely peaceful.
