Welcome to Sinless September, I hope it is too, we are about to see the Jewish New Year and Day of Atonement, as Teshuvah, the season of repentance winds down. I think sometimes people have forgotten what a sin is, I love hearing grace, especially after growing up hearing that all had sinned and fallen short of His glory, Romans 3:23, I wish they had kept going to 24, grace.
People have their own ideas of right and wrong. I see it all the time. The Aramaic Bible says it this way, and Jesus spoke Aramaic and Hebrew, There is a way that men think is right, and its ways are the ways of death. Proverbs 14:12, it is not okay to think that because everyone fights, argues, gossips, uses drugs, or whatever it is that we can do it.
Do not be deceived: “Bad company ruins good morals.” 1 Corinthians 15:33
After coming out a series about angels, I thought of how people might not really understand sin. It is great to be taught about grace, but it is not right to use it to hide or try to hide sin, you know you can’t hide from God. A sin is breaking a moral law or one of God’s ordinances. Missing the mark, like an arrow in flight that veers off course and never hits the target. The word for repentance is metanoya, it simply means to turn around and go the other way, ask forgiveness and turn back to Him.
While we are not under the law, what Paul called the ministry of death, are under grace or the ministry of the Spirit, how much more believers should understand the working of the Spirit in us and be able to resist the devil and yield to God? Without being preach and hellfire and damnation, though I suppose it has it’s place, I believe we are to to go to God out of love and if that doesn’t get you, fear won’t get you saved. The fear of the Lord is wisdom, but it is respect for the one who has the say over you is far better than what you think.
Our first post will cover a sin that we all commit, probably one a day, every day, and that is why we needed Jesus as the only perfect sacrifice, and His grace as He fulfilled the law and prophets. Here’s our verse, and it both a sin of omission and commission.
So whoever knows the right thing to do and fails to do it, for him it is sin. James 4:17
Uh oh, it’s a gotcha’ moment, right? It happens to all of us, don’t worry, just start thinking and letting the Spirit lead you into the truth in the verse. It says if we know what is right. Sometimes well meaning talks or trying to help goes awry. It is what you know and don’t do.
You should read the Bible but you go out with friends. ” I’ll read later. ” But then you’re asleep. have you called the family member that you can’t stand? Come on, we all have one. Did you park in a handicapped space? Not give back too much change? Have you passed up a chance to witness? Offer encouragement?
A lady told me recently that I was the first person to comment on her blog. I do try to do that though I usually write more than I get to read. It was so hot here in the summer, our air was out, I was miserable for three days, finally, I was hanging out in the freezer section of the grocery store. I started asking people to check on elderly or sick neighbors. How many could use a fan at least? And with the heat wave, Jesus remembers if we give even a cup of cold water. I always offer people water or juice, soda, even if they are working outside or visiting.
Buy someone’s breakfast, I’ve seen that happen, give the extra few dollars so someone doesn’t have put something back at the store. We always want to to listen for the nudge of the Spirit, not the drive yourself crazy trying to do good, that is not the idea of grace, we may find ourselves swimming upstream, but you might have to do that and take some heat to follow Christ and be a fisher of men and women. Children need Him too!
I hope this will wake us stop and think, what are some ways you know is sin by not doing it, don’t tell me, but make a list, if you can talk to someone about it, come into agreement or forgive, do it, I have tried, but I won’t keep apologizing over and over, that’s not it and some might not get it or think they are wrong or never admit it, God knows, He just wants us to live in His love and peace as much as possible, and do the good we know to do and not sin, but He is there if we do.
