This is a common southern phrase and perhaps even elsewhere, I am careful not to use it as a common phrase though, just being irritated or something. We can lose sight of the meaning and we don’t want to be complacent. In the south also it is Lordy Mercy.
But what does the Bible have to say about mercy. Plenty and the Hebrew words for womb and mercy are very similar, so you could say with ease that God’s mercy is like motherly love, and fatherly compassion, why He made both women and men.
I heard a chorus from some CD once, and sometimes I will just sing it, it goes, Lord have mercy, Christ have mercy an repeats. We are having a little fun this moth with sayings from our mothers and some southern ones, but I am adding lots of verses to study and even talk over with our mothers and others. Let’s look at mercy.
Through the LORD’s mercies we are not consumed, Because His compassions fail not. Great is His faithfulness. Lamentations 3:22
His mercies begin afresh each morning. Lamentations 3:23 NLT
LORD, don’t hold back your tender mercies from me. Let your unfailing love and faithfulness always protect me. Psalm 40:11 NLT
Have mercy on me, O God, according to your steadfast love; according to your abundant mercy blot out my transgressions. Psalm 51:1
The LORD is gracious and compassionate; Slow to anger and great in mercy. Psalm 145:8
Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy. Matthew 5:7
His mercy lasts from generation to generation for those who fear ( reverence ) Him. Luke 1:50
Therefore be merciful, just as your Father also is merciful. Luke 6:36
…I will have mercy on whom I have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I have compassion…. Romans 9:15
For judgment is without mercy to the one who has shown no mercy. Mercy triumphs over judgment. James 2:13
But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, willing to yield, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality and without hypocrisy. James 3:17
The Lord is full of compassion and mercy. James 5:11
…keep yourselves in the love of God as you await the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ to bring you eternal life. Jude 1:22
There are many more, so take a look for yourself and see how merciful God has really been considering what has happened in history, He proclaimed Himself merciful to Moses and only a merciful and loving God would give us Christ.
I will leave you with the thought about His mercy toward us. ( Bless the Lord ) who crowns you with steadfast love and mercy. Psalm 103:4
