God has told His people, “Here is a place of rest; let the weary rest here. This is a place of quiet rest.” But they would not listen. Isaiah 28:12
What a powerful statement and one we should heed as believers. A place of rest, quiet rest. But they would not listen. No wonder God was angry and withdrew His rest. For a time anyway. Jesus offered in Matthew 11:28-30, even before He went to the cross, how much more rest should we be listening to afterward, why Hebrews 4 has to soak in.
I did a word study and the Hebrew, manuchah and manoach, pronounced with a k sound, are the feminine and masculine forms of rest. Literally, a resting place, or a state of resting, a condition of the heart and soul. A spiritual rest, not just physical, I have explained that and realized that the person wasn’t getting the idea. I hope to explain it as simply as possible.
God rested after six days of creation, the seventh day was called the Sabbath, no work was done on the Sabbath, Orthodox Jews are not to cook, or work from sundown to sundown. They don’t handle money or even walk far. Even today. These were the people Jesus dealt with and loved, even died for. And one day they will realize that. God sat on His throne and creation went on, there was grace, and peace was in the garden until the fall.
It took years for the plan of redemption to come in the world and Jesus would finish His work on the cross and return to the Father and the throne next to Him. He too, could sit back and watch as creation continued. As it had unfolded at God’s spoken words, so salvation had been made available through the blood of Christ. There was nothing left to create, no other sacrifice, this rest is perpetual, it is a state of mind and heart that is confident in the one on the throne. That being Jesus, God put it all in His hands and one day He will give it back to God.
While there is nothing left to create, God can create. He creates new lives for believers, He still performs miracles. I see them everyday. Maybe not, what we think of them as but miracles none the less, the avoidance of danger, the problem that works out and I have seen people live and not die, I am one, myself. And I believe miracles are coming.
While the Jews saw miracles and the disciples who were Jews, whether or not people practiced their faith was like it is now, people can call themselves anything and that doesn’t make it so, even being a Christian, which was meant as an insult in Antioch, I like the term believer, Mark 16:6, the believers, speak in tongues, lay hands on the sick, they put out the devil, they drink deadly poison ( hear false teaching and it doesn’t hurt them ), raise the dead. I have seen that too people only hours from death recover, some given zero to 30% survival, survive. Miracles should happen more.
And why? Jesus finished His work and sent the Spirit to guide, teach and comfort, to give gifts as He sees fit, we are not to hinder or grieve Him. But what about rest? Perhaps, you have hear the old standard, ” Come Unto Me ” from a hymnal, the words from the chorus, ” In the Holy Spirit, He will you give you rest. ” Okay, easy right? It should be, but the enemy will try to make it as difficult as possible, but sometimes we help, even unwittingly.
Women deserve extra rest for all they do, and I know, husbands work hard too. And children, well, with children being in and out of school, subjected to so many differences than past generations, when children were used to naps and quiet times, as opposed to constant stimuli and electronics, children need rest.
But parents and probably, especially, women will have to learn and receive it, to put it into the daily routine. I know the Lord will help those who will listen and not refuse a gift like that. We, as women of faith need to be still, quiet and listen for the Spirit’s voice, we should know it and not follow others. It is called discernment, I tell women to learn to discern. Rest is not the only thing people did not listen to. Here are some verses to study.
This is My resting place forever and ever; here I will dwell, for I have desired this home. Psalm 132:14
Jesus said, “Let’s go off by ourselves to a quiet place and rest a while. Mark 6:31
We should do our best to enter the place of rest, so none of us will disobey and miss going there, as they did. Hebrews 4:11
Jeremiah, no matter what you do, the people won’t listen. Jeremiah 7:27
When I called, they did not listen; so when they called, I would not listen. Zechariah 7:13
He who is of God hears the words of God; for this reason you do not hear them, because you are not of God. John 8:47
And Jesus even explained parables and why we should study.
Therefore I speak to them in parables; because while seeing they do not see, and while hearing they do not hear, nor do they understand. Matthew 13:13
