For the bread of God is He who comes down from heaven, and gives life unto the world. John 6:33
I am the bread of life; he who comes to Me will not hunger, and he who believes in Me will never thirst. John 6:35
I am the living bread that came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever. And the bread that I will give for the life of the world is my flesh. John 6:51
When Jesus told stories in parables people did not understand, did they? They did not view Him as the Messiah, though they realized He was comparing Himself to the manna from heaven, and indeed, He is that. And surely there were those who had no idea what He was talking about giving His life and the bread being His flesh.
There were many who stopped following Him as He taught and instituted the Eucharist and Holy Communion. We should not have that same mentality as believers, we have the benefit of hindsight, not being taught Judaism, though there are Messianic Christians and those who observe some of the traditions. For the most part, we had Gentile upbringing or even no religious training, that is why when we receive Christ, we need the Holy Spirit to guide us into all truth, after all Jesus, the Son of God is the only one who came as God in the flesh to give His life. He sacrificed for us to be saved.
Many people do not understand the blessing of Communion, though it was practiced in the early church. Believers would go from house to house breaking bread. Now, it is often received once a month or at certain times, but has come back into to teaching in recent years, as a daily practice at home and a way to bring healing to our minds and hearts.
What many failed to realize then and now is that Jesus existed in the beginning, He was before the patriarchs, I believe He was the one walking in the Garden of Eden, and He appeared often in the Old Testament being referred to as the Angel of the Lord, though sometimes it may have been an actual angel.
Communion and even parables, the Bible, in general, can present mysteries, another reason He sent the Holy Spirit. We must never forget the sanctity and sacred, holy, teachings of God. His words are definitely pure and simple. They were not intended to confuse, God authors peace. They were meant to be studied and rightly divided, understood by believers, they are not the children’s bread give to dogs, Jesus even said, though He did heal the girl.
That woman dropped her pretense and realized she was a Gentile, when she said even dogs or puppies as it may translate get crumbs, He healed the girl. While Jesus came to the Jews, His own received Him not, even though He was crucified many still did not believe, even having seen miracles, but after the Spirit came, Gentiles or really non Jews, all of us were included and have been given the privilege of accepting Christ as Lord. Since He had made us priest and kings in the spiritual sense we can break bread and feast on the fresh manna, fresh grace and the bread of life and the bread of heaven every day, whether it is through Communion or just studying and honoring His words.
Now, many people have fear about taking Communion and not being worthy, let me assure His grace covers you, don’t be afraid, but keep a repentant heart, I would not take it as a willing sinner, if you are refusing to give up a lifestyle or sin, that you know is wrong. You have to rightly divide that His blood was for sin, so I would not drink it and keep sinning, that is quite different to the mistakes we might make on a any given daily or something we may overlook.
The bread is His body broken for us, for our healing. It gives life, the bread of life. Jesus came to give abundant life. John 10:10, and I was amazed as we studied offerings that the Greek for thanksgiving is Eucharisto. So Jesus is our once and for all offering, and worthy of all praise, and He alone makes us worthy and is our bread of life.
