Guard your steps when you go to the house of God. To draw near to listen is better than to offer the sacrifice of fools, for they do not know that they are doing evil. Be not rash with your mouth, nor let your heart be hasty to utter a word before God, for God is in heaven and you are on earth. Therefore let your words be few. For a dream comes with much business, and a fool’s voice with many words. Ecclesiastes 5:1-3
Have you ever made one of those foolish promises to God? You just can’t bargain with Him, although I know He has agreed to things I was interceding for, it was something in line with His Word. But I have had those days when i was like, if you’ll or this or that, and that just doesn’t cut it, thankfully, we grow in grace and wisdom.
I did have the good sense not to lie to Him and I would pray sometimes, especially when people were miraculously lose weight and I don’t doubt some did, I said I can’t tell you I will never eat chocolate again, it just wouldn’t be true. I was foolish like the Galatians, He looks at hearts.
The point is that you are better off listening. And you know what, you have to be quiet to listen and to even hear the voice of the Spirit. Those that are rash with their mouths are often those quickest to be in offense and anger, and wonder why God doesn’t help them. He can’t get through to you, that’s why.
Worry and fear are a waste of time for a believer, but I must say we do or should gain some experience from going through things. It is far better to rest and receive, and rely on His promises and peace. Our verse says to let our words be few, I know I talk a lot, but I also know how to listen and be still.
A dream comes with much business, I never even thought of that when I was hoping and dreaming, but He is in the details and had better plans than we do. A fool’s voice has many words. I can attest to that, and include my own, wasting words on someone who will not hear or understand, you can sow, but sometimes you just need to let God be God.
And of course Proverbs is full of wisdom and about watching our words. Our words should be an offering to the Lord with praise and worship. There is a group reading Proverbs this month, though it is already a week into October, it is easy to catch up, I still owe reading Isaiah 53 to Him, He understands.
So, our visual today is to, at least in mind’s eye, relax as if walking through the autumn leaves, enjoying the colors, the crunch beneath our feet, the chill in the air, a warm, cozy sweater and scarf. It is quiet, still, serene. A good place to listen for the Spirit, and not be hasty with words. Let’s listen instead of offering.
