While we are talking about sacrifices we will see how there different kinds offered at the temple in the Old Testament, there was sin, grain, and guilt offerings, for example. But Jesus was the only acceptable sacrifice that would cover us eternally, the once and for all sacrifice, who would believe.
Like the oil that was used for incense, He was crushed, the very life pressed out of Him. Oil is a type of the Spirit, and Isaiah 53 covers His gruesome death, He was beaten and scourged, the punishment for our peace, which is another type of offering. God certainly frowned on human sacrifice, He would not allow Abraham to sacrifice Isaac, as pagans offered their children, but He would give His only begotten Son, to bring us back to Him through redemption and salvation, but we have to receive.
I realize this study can get deep and heavy. But there was the love of God there in allowing His Son to die, He was the only would who was pure and holy enough to redeem us. Like the offering, He was even washed, His blood is on the mercy seat of heaven, and our hearts.
I don’t want to get into graphic detail, I just want to convey the love it took to be that sacrifice. No one took His life, He was not murdered, He gave it willingly. When you study the Bible you will learn the many layers of it, the types and shadows. Abraham, for instance, got a glimpse of Christ coming, Isaac, the child of promise, who was a long time coming is a picture of Christ, he even carried the wood on his back for the offering. But instead of a lamb which God would provide there was instead a ram.
Sacrifices were to be pure, spotless, God would accept nothing less. That is why Jesus came. That is why no other faith compares, no God sacrificed for us but Him. It can get into burnt offerings, Jesus was bruised and pierced, like the Jewish matzah of Communion, He was also going to hell to retrieve the keys to death, hell and the grave, matzah has stripes, holes and looks a little burnt. That is why receiving Communion is important for believers and to be respected but not feared, just keep that repentant heart.
Did you know the whole lamb was to be eaten at Passover? We are so blessed not to have to go through those rituals, all we needed was Jesus. He is the once and for all offering. Let’s look at the verse and you might want to read all of Hebrews 10, as well.
For since the law has but a shadow of the good things to come instead of the true form of these realities, it can never, by the same sacrifices that are continually offered every year, make perfect those who draw near. Hebrews 10:1
If sacrifices were good enough, they would have stopped, but they didn’t. Only Jesus was the acceptable sacrifice. His body was that shadow. Colossians 2:7
For what the Law was powerless to do in that it was weakened by the flesh, God did by sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful man, as an offering for sin. He thus condemned sin in the flesh….. Romans 8:3
But when Christ had offered for all time a single sacrifice for sins, He sat down at the right hand of God, waiting from that time until His enemies should be made a footstool for His feet. For by a single offering he has perfected for all time those who are being sanctified. Hebrews 10:12-14
Now, Hebrews 10 is full of wisdom, it speaks of God not wanting sacrifices, but obedience. We have to bring ourselves into obedience, by understanding the obedience of Christ, He even was obedient to death, in order to save us. He is spoken of as the High Priest, He sprinkled His blood on our souls, purifying and sanctifying us. Like God, He just wants our obedience to His command to love. If we do, we won’t be breaking the rest.
Jesus did not destroy the law but fulfilled it, we are not under the law, but grace through Him, and we now have His Spirit as a believer, we are not to keep willfully sinning. There are consequences, the law could convict with two or three witnesses, the Spirit is our witness. It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of a living God. It is a good idea to read and reread the chapter, it has to sink in.
But for now, here is a good verse to remember. Therefore do not throw away your confidence, which has a great reward. Hebrews 10:25, it can be our visual today. Do you want God to be your rewarder as you seek Him.? Hebrews 11:6 Then we must recognize the great sacrifice of His Son and not insult the Spirit of Grace.
