Whoever has ears, let them hear. Matthew 11:15
You can read this chapter if you like, but Jesus’ words are for the people of His day as well as ours. He was explaining how the ministry of John the Baptist preceded His. The people were always expecting Elijah, I suppose as the Messiah. They thought John was he and also Jesus. He asks them to hear, using John as a figurative, Elijah. And when John was in prison, he even had doubts about Jesus.
Now, if you will recall, Jesus asks the disciples who they thought He was, one answer was Elijah, it was Peter who had the right answer that He was the Christ, the anointed one, the very Son of God. Of course, Peter didn’t arrive at that conclusion all by himself, it was reveal to him by the Spirit.
Later, in Revelation the phrase above is repeated to the seven churches, that whoever has ears to hear to listen to the Spirit. That rings true to us today. We have to not only listen to but obey the Holy Spirit. That is wisdom in these days, these last days before He returns for the church. Are we even sensitive enough to feel the time when He arrives approaching, perhaps, the peace He gives us is already guiding us in that direction.
We listen to the news, the doom and gloom portrayed in the media, and yet we know what He promised us. Healing, protection, peace. Do you hear what the Spirit is saying? Is He calling you to a quiet and peaceful rest in Him. Is He reassuring you that heaven is real? Even John the Baptist, the cousin who leapt in his mother’s womb had his doubts about Jesus. are we any less human? And he was right with Jesus and saw the miracles, even the Holy Spirit descending on Him.
We have the blessing and gift of the Holy Spirit, and He is with us all the time. We can call on Jesus anytime and He will answer and the Spirit teaches us to hear. Remember, there is John’s baptism and the subsequent one of the Spirit that Jesus offers us. I always ask everyone to study about the Spirit before asking for the baptism and gift of tongues.
You will learn to discern His voice from all others and since He is Spirit, and He touches our spirit, it may sound like our own voice to an extent, but it will be a strong and powerful thought, and unction or impression, even a warning not to something or even to do something. He will teach us and guide us into all things,, if we have ears to hear Him.
Father, may we find your peace and safety, even in this world, in Jesus name, as we look to the Spirit for guidance and direction, your wisdom and comfort in troubled times, I pray we have ears to hear the Spirit, and to do your will, open the eyes of our understanding and give us ears to hear, and we praise you Lord
And one more verse, just to know He wants us to listen to Him.
And your ears shall hear a word behind you, saying, “This is the way, walk in it,” when you turn to the right or when you turn to the left. Isaiah 30:21
