The counterpart or counterfeit to a receptive heart is a deceptive one. And people are good at that. I remember a lady who once had some criticism of my writing aspirations. She had married into a family that had, ” actors “. And she said it like that, as if they were lepers or ax murderers or something.
Actors can act and walk away from their roles, a really good actor have the ability to delve into the character, but go back to their own personality and not become the character, unless it is a good quality. Bad actors are people who manipulate and control others, and they do not have to be on screen. Many times, they will take a cue from you, that you can be pushed around or bought off, intimidated or scared. And some take advantage of your good nature, or Christian values.
Let’s talk about deceitful hearts and start with David. He was called a man after God’s own heart, though he was an adulterer and murderer. Why? Because, God looks at hearts. He was human, and gave into the flesh but basically, he was repentant and he did obey God. And God is a man of His word about forgiveness, he made the yearly feast and sacrifices. Compare that to Jesus once and for all sacrifice.
Of course, that doesn’t mean you can sin or go kill someone, though sin abounds, the grace that outweighs it because of Jesus. Grace is not something to be trifled with or abused, God knows hearts. Look at Eve’s pure heart that was deceived, Adam’s sin was willful.
I used to think that Adam was afraid but he wasn’t, they knew no fear, perhaps he was thinking Eve would get something he would not, I don’t know. I do know the old adage, oh, what a tangled web we weave, when first we practice to deceive is very true. When that is you aim from the start, you are playing with fire, and also if you do not recognize their ways.
And the following verse is very true. But shouldn’t a heart be changed when Christ is in there? It can still give into the flesh, let Christ rule it and the flesh by His Spirit. Here are our verses.
The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately sick; who can understand it? Jeremiah 17:9, other translations say wicked, and beyond cure.
You destroy liars; the LORD despises violent and deceitful people. Psalm 5:6
Neighbors lie to each other, speaking with flattering lips and deceitful hearts. Psalm 12:2
Deceit is in the hearts of those who plot evil, but those who promote peace have joy. Proverbs 12:20
The one with a perverse heart finds no good, and he whose tongue is deceitful falls into trouble.. Proverbs 17:20
Surely you heard of Him and were taught in Him, in keeping with the truth that is in Jesus, to put off your former way of life, your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires; to be renewed in the spirit of your minds. Ephesians 4:21-23
I am afraid, however, that just as Eve was deceived by the serpent’s cunning, your minds may be led astray from your simple and pure devotion to Christ. 2 Corinthians 11:3
I pray for us today, as true believers in His love, that we may discern His voice and follow no other, but by His Spirit prevail against the flesh, and the plots and lies laid by the enemy and others, sometimes, even Christians who are not rightly dividing His Word, and be blessed with a receptive heart, and neither have or fall victim to a deceitful heart, in Jesus name.
