The Holy Spirit of Promise

I had taken my title from this lovely anonymous quote, ” No pillow so soft as God’s promise. ” But the Holy Spirit has moved over September, and He is the Spirit of Promise. Immediately, I thought of Jacob and that rock he fell asleep on. You know the story of angels and the ladder. How often have I fallen asleep on a pillow that felt like that rock.

Migraines, TMJ, plain exhaustion. I’m sure you know the drill, whether it’s children getting off to school or carpools, soccer practices, overtime or just overdrive, we have all been there. Whether jet lagged or lagging behind, we all know the tossing and turning, clock watching. The ” It must be time to get up and it is 4:06. ”

Or when you could sleep, you realize how loud your house really is. There’s the television, the door, the lawnmower and ta-da, the telemarketer. Oh, I could go on and on. I have had people who are vociferous try to whisper me awake, which really is worse than loud being startled awake and shaking like a toddler. Have you ever seen one do that? You can sort of nuzzle up to someone to wake them up. ( nuzzle, is a pet word, also…to lie very close to someone or something; cuddle or snuggle up. If you we here with me I might say snuggle up like snuggle pup.)

My favorite way to wake up is when the sunlight comes through and warms me, fluttering, sleepy, eyelashes are kissed awake by the light of His love. The morning sun warms be as I toss off blankets and look out the window, and it’s as if the morning Son, whispers ” beloved ” to me. I am my beloved’s and He is mine.

His lips put a song in my ear and my day begins, and He is altogether lovely, even if my days are not all perfect, my Lord is. And He loves me, and that is the softest pillow God could give us is the promise that Jesus will never leave or forsake us. Although I stand in both morning and evening unworthy before Him, He gives me worth and I still receive His blessing and benefit from His abundance. The Holy Spirit is the Comforter and the Spirit of Promise, providing the pillow of resting in God’s promises.

I can wake knowing and feeling the heavenly smile that is so glad to waken me, and so glad to offer me His rest both night and day. I can rest my head and my heart on the shoulder of a King. His love is ever before  me. It calms me and it quiets me,. It quiets the heart that He says not let it be troubled, neither afraid. It gives His peace in place of a race that I would never win, and gives me grace to finish a race, that I was even amazed to still be in. But when I gave Him first place, He gave me first place, a golden crown of glory. A crown of peace in exchange for His crown of thorns, a burden that was light, replacing the cross I carried.

I am a crown of beauty in the hand of my Lord, His head was bowed and bloodied, so mine could be free of fear and worry. The struggle is over and I’ve nothing to prove. He gave everything He had to give, and all I have to do is believe, to call upon His name and receive grace upon grace, peace upon peace, unwavering confidence in Jesus, in the Spirit of grace. Grace and truth are in Jesus.

Nothing missing, nothing broken, nothing amiss or out of place. Shaloam. Truthfully, defined, How is your peace? This is the peace I offer, my peace I leave with you. Come to me, I will give you rest. Arms outstretched and opened wide to embrace you. Your emptiness and loneliness, I will fill, I will not leave you helpless. If the pillow of God’s promise is soft, my peace is softer still. You are my dove, arise and take your place with me, I am always beside you. Fear not, you will not fear in my peace. My peace is your peace and a place of safety forever.

Jesus promises the Spirit in John 14:16, in Ephesians 1:13, it says we are sealed with the Spirit of Promise. 2 Corinthians 1:22, says that the Holy Spirit in our heart identifies us as His own and is the first installment on all He has promised. Galatians 3:14, says we received the blessing of Abraham, through faith and the promised Spirit. He is called the Spirit of Promise, and Jesus surely keeps His promises, not one word will fail. Isaiah 55:11

I can believe He would say, ” I will let you sleep, I give you my peace and rest and keep my promises to you. I will kiss you with the kiss of peace, I will always love you in my peace. And I will wake you the breath of the Spirit of Promise and with my peace. ” Rebecca Jones/ stock photo

For the promise is for you and for your children and for all who are far off, everyone whom the Lord our God calls to Himself. Acts 2:39
